Bachelor of Management Program Updates

Dear BMGT student community,

Below is an archived set of communications that we’ve been sharing with the BMGT student community since March 2020. We will continue to update this list with new content as it’s shared.

Please reach out to us if you require clarification on anything you read below (please see the ‘Contact us’ section at the bottom of the page).

Dear Bachelor of Management student,

This note provides an update about plans for the Bachelor of Management program for Winter Session 2022, Terms 1 and 2 (September 2022 – April 2023). We are preparing for the 2022/23 academic year with the expectation that all students will be in Kelowna and thus are envisioning an essentially on-campus program. While doing so, we are continuing to learn from the last couple of years and we will embrace COVID-inspired innovations of online content and interaction, where that meets the needs of the pedagogy of the course and the overall learning experience.

We will update and share with you any developments and changes as they occur. If the delivery format for a particular MGMT course changes after registration has opened, an email communication from the Faculty’s Academic Programs Office will be sent to all students registered in the course, and the delivery mode for the course will be updated in the SSC Course Schedule.

If you have any questions, please get in touch via fom.bmgt@ubc.ca.

Best,

Dear Bachelor of Management student,

On January 26th, a UBC Broadcast message was distributed that stated that the majority of UBC’s Term 2 courses will be delivered in-person starting February 7th.  Please remember that all MGMT courses will continue to be fully accessible online for the remainder of Term 2 with no requirement for you to be on campus, in Kelowna or even in Canada.  Some MGMT courses may include optional in-person components once the campus reopens to in-person learning but those in-person components will not be required.  If you have questions about how one of your courses will be delivered, please review the course details in Canvas and, if needed, reach out to your instructor to ask for those details.

Many of you are also registered in courses from other Faculties (examples include but are not limited to MATH, ENGL or PSYO courses).  The delivery format of those courses is determined by the Faculties responsible for those courses. If you have questions about whether a non-MGMT course may require in-person attendance later in the term, please check with the instructor or appropriate Faculty.

Course Withdrawal Extended to February 6th 11:59PM (PST)

Additionally, a message was sent out Thursday January 27th, regarding the extended course withdrawal deadline that was approved at yesterday’s UBC Okanagan Senate. Please note, the extension of the deadline is for course withdrawal only. Students can no longer add courses or switch sections for lectures or labs. If you want to withdraw from a course before February 6th 11:59PM (PST), you can do so via your SSC.  Dropping a course by that deadline means there will be no ‘W’ on your student record, and you will be eligible for a full tuition refund. If you have already withdrawn from a course after January 24th and received a W standing, your ‘W’ will be removed and your fees will be adjusted. Please note, it may take up to five working days to remove any W that may temporarily appear, and to update your fees.

Please reach out to us at fom.bmgt@ubc.ca you have questions.

Best,

Dear Bachelor of Management student,

On January 12th, you received a UBC Broadcast message stating that the majority of UBC’s Term 2 courses are being delivered online until February 7th.  Please remember that all MGMT courses will continue to be available online for the remainder of Term 2 with no requirement for you to be on campus, in Kelowna or even in Canada.  Some MGMT courses may include optional in-person components once the campus reopens to in-person learning but those in-person components will not be required.  Regardless of where you reside and how you participate in MGMT courses, we remain committed to providing you with as effective a learning experience as possible during these changing circumstances.

Reminder: Add-drop deadline

Please note, the Term 2 add-drop deadline is quickly approaching (January 24th). If you drop a course before 11:59pm PT January 24th, there will be no W on your student record and you will be eligible for a full tuition refund. Between January 25th and March 18th, you can still withdraw from a course through your SSC using the “add/drop courses” function. For courses dropped during this period, you will receive a W standing and will be charged tuition. If you wish to withdraw from a course after March 19th, you must submit a Late Withdrawal Request; please note, requests are not guaranteed to be approved.

Reminder: Academic Concession

Academic concession is the official process to handle instances of student illness or other personal challenges that affect your ability to complete course work on schedule.  Please ensure you have reviewed the material on academic concession that is provided in the MGMT Foundations Canvas course.  If you think that you need a concession, please put in your request as soon as possible. In general, if you are requesting academic concession for one course you should connect directly with your instructor.  If you require academic concession for multiple courses, please connect with the Academic Programs Office (fom.bmgt@ubc.ca) and we can assist with the steps to move forward.

Please know that we understand and appreciate how difficult, frustrating and complicated the pandemic continues to be. We remain committed to offering learning experiences in MGMT courses that are focused on inclusivity. Please reach out to us at fom.bmgt@ubc.ca if we can be of assistance.

Dear Management Student,

Everyone in the Faculty continues to work closely together to fulfill our responsibility to provide as effective a learning environment in the management subject area as possible. Foremost in our minds is our continued commitment to all students’ learning, whatever the conditions. Our aim is to accommodate the full range of learning needs that have arisen from the difficult and changing circumstances that we all find ourselves in, and to do so based on inclusion.

As a reminder:

  • All MGMT courses can be completed online. There will be no requirement to be in Kelowna, in BC, or even in Canada to complete a MGMT course for Term 2. Any in-person experiences that we can offer will be completely optional and not required.
  • Students can search the course catalog for course delivery modes.
  • Where possible, flexibility has been built into course and assessment planning.

You may have seen the communication from Santa Ono and Lesley Cormack to the entire UBC community earlier today re the majority of instruction across all faculties on both campuses of UBC being online for the first part of next term. In line with that announcement, there will be no optional in-person experiences associated with MGMT courses on campus until after 24th January. Please watch out for updates regarding the remainder of the term, once the term is underway.

We will update and share with you any developments and changes as they occur. If the delivery format for a particular MGMT course changes, an email communication from the Faculty’s Academic Programs Office will be sent to all students registered in the course, and the delivery mode for the course will be updated in the SSC Course Schedule.

Please note, the Faculty of Management is only responsible for the delivery of MGMT courses. If you are taking a course offered by another Faculty, you’ll need to verify the mode of delivery with that Faculty. Bear in mind the aforementioned communication from Santa Ono and Lesley Cormack to the entire UBC community earlier today re the majority of instruction across all faculties on both campuses of UBC being online until 24th January.

If you have any questions, please reach out to the Academic Programs Office at fom.bmgt@ubc.ca.

Sincerely,

Dayl Hancock

Dear BMGT student,

In this message you’ll find information related to course delivery this fall, immigration and travel advice, and additional resources to support your wellbeing.

Make Academic Plans

If you’d like to be on campus but are concerned that you might not be able to travel to begin or continue your studies in September, or if, for any reason, you would prefer to access courses online, you can learn more about course delivery options for the 2021/22 Winter Session and get information on which courses will be offered online, here. We also encourage you to revisit the information in the course calendar to see what delivery options are already available for the courses in which you are registered. Once classes start, your course syllabi will indicate what provisions will be available in your situation.

For help planning your course schedule and for options, you can meet with an Academic Advisor. They can discuss options available to you, such as which courses you can complete online, the possibility of being granted a Letter of Permission that allows you to study at another institution, or the option of deferring your education for a term or more.

Over the past 18 months, UBC’s Okanagan campus has incorporated significant additional flexibility into teaching and learning activities, using mechanisms ranging from policy adaptations through to individual instructor approaches rooted in care and compassion for the challenging circumstances in which students find themselves, but please note that not every course on campus can be adapted.

A number of measures are being implemented to support students accessing their courses:

  • All MGMT courses can be completed online.
  • Students can search the course catalog for online courses.
  • Where possible, flexibility has been built into course and assessment planning.

For updates on UBC Okanagan’s approach to the Fall semester 2021, please see UBC Okanagan’s COVID-19 Response Information.

 Find Support

We know that uncertainty or confusion around arrangements for the 2021W Session may impact your plans and may cause additional anxiety or worry during an already challenging time. There are multiple resources available that can help you navigate these experiences. You may reach out to multilingual counselors who are available to speak with you 24/7 through UBC’s Student Assistance Program. The Student Assistance Program is a free, 24/7 wellness resource that is available online, by phone, video chat, instant messaging, or mobile app. The Government of B.C. has support for post-secondary students affected by the travel suspension. Additionally, you can find student resources and support on our website.

The situation regarding Covid-19 is rapidly changing, as is direction from the Canadian Federal and Provincial Governments, including Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Please note the guidance offered in this message is based on the information currently available on the day that it was written. Please keep yourself updated on the situation as it evolves via the links that are provided above.

If you’re an international student, the following information from the Global Engagement Office may also be useful:

Check Your Immigration Status

From an immigration perspective, you can begin or continue your studies online outside of Canada, even if your study permit application has not been processed yet, since you are not technically required to have a valid study permit for the purposes of studying online outside of Canada.

If you intend to apply for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) after you complete your studies, check how your eligibility might be impacted by studying remotely. Or if you are considering dropping to part-time or taking a break from studies starting in September, find details on UBC’s international student Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page.

Read thoroughly and continue to check the Travelling to Canada Guide for the most updated information on who can travel to Canada at this time (step 1), self-quarantine and COVID-19 testing requirements (step 3) and what documents you should carry with you for entry to Canada (step 4).

The Government of British Columbia also has a list of supports available for post-secondary students affected by India and Pakistan travel restrictions. You can find additional UBC support and resources on the Student Services website.

International Student Advising

If you have further questions or concerns regarding your immigration status, travel and/or transition to Canada, please reach out to our Global Engagement Office directly, and they will do their best to assist you. Immigration Advisors are currently available to support students virtually through video-based appointments and email. To request an appointment or support, email geo.ubco@ubc.ca (Please include your student number in the subject line).

The most current COVID-related guidance for returning to campus including vaccine recommendations and requirements and COVID testing requirements can be found here.

As ever, if you have any questions or concerns, by all means reach out to the Faculty via fom.bmgt@ubc.ca.

We very much look forward to seeing you virtually or in-person on September 7th, and for sure will continue to support you as much as we possibly can as you progress on your academic journey.

Best regards,
Roger

Dear Bachelor of Management student,

As you may have seen from recent news, the conditions we are facing in the upcoming term remain very uncertain. They have changed markedly over the last month or so, and are likely to change significantly over the coming weeks. We are doing our utmost to adapt to those conditions and changes as effectively and quickly as possible.

Everyone in the Faculty has been working closely together to fulfill our responsibility to provide as effective a learning environment in the management subject area as possible. Uppermost in our minds is our continued commitment to all students’ learning, whatever the conditions. Our aim is to accommodate the full range of learning needs that have arisen from the difficult and changing circumstances that we all find ourselves in, and to do so based on inclusion.

We will update and share with you any developments and changes as they occur. For information about a particular course in which you are registered, please continue to check Canvas. If the delivery format for a particular course changes, an email communication from the Faculty’s Academic Programs Office will be sent to all students registered in the course, and the delivery mode for the course will be updated in the SSC Course Schedule.

Please note, if you are taking a course offered by another Faculty and have questions about the course or the delivery mode, you should contact that Faculty directly.

You may have also seen recent announcements regarding proof of COVID-19 vaccination to access a range of activities, such as indoor ticketed sporting events, and fitness centres. There is more information on those requirements at: https://broadcastemail.ubc.ca/2021/08/23/announcement-of-bc-vaccine-card-for-specific-activities/.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please reach out via fom.bmgt@ubc.ca.

Best,
Roger

Dear Bachelor of Management student,

This note provides an update about plans for the Bachelor of Management for Winter Session 2021, Term 1 and 2. We’ll have further news for you in a few weeks, once more detailed arrangements have been made. (Please remember, the Faculty of Management is only responsible for delivering MGMT courses. If you are taking a course offered by another faculty, you’ll need to verify the mode of delivery with that faculty.)

As you will perhaps have seen from the recent UBC announcement, based on current immunization timelines in BC and vaccine approvals, and with strong and effective safety plans in place, UBC is planning for more in-person activity on-campus for the Winter Session commencing in September 2021.
In line with that announcement, we aim to reintroduce increased on-campus learning experiences for Bachelor of Management students in September, assuming it is allowed by public health conditions. Because we recognize that the individual circumstances of students mean that a return to campus might not be possible for everyone, we also want to let all of you know that we will combine any return to campus activity with an ongoing commitment to online access to MGMT courses in Winter Session 2021, Term 1 and 2. We are working with students to explore the options for on-campus learning experiences, and how those experiences can combine with online access.

We are extremely keen for us all to return safely to our distinctive, on-campus focus as soon as possible. A return to more campus-based activity is fantastic news, but no one solution will work for every Bachelor of Management student. The Faculty has a uniquely diverse student body – e.g., 55% of Bachelor of Management students come from outside BC, and over 30% of the total come from countries around the world – and Bachelor of Management students face very different individual circumstances – e.g., global access to vaccines is not equitable, and some students are especially concerned about being on campus and transmitting COVID-19 back to their communities.

We will do our utmost to offer as many on-campus learning experiences as safely as possible for everyone who is able to take them up, while also ensuring that on-campus learning is not a requirement for MGMT courses. It will be possible to complete all MGMT courses online, and all Faculty organised co-curricular and extracurricular activities online, in Winter Session 2021, Term 1 and 2. We will strive to ensure that no one, whether on campus or off, will be disadvantaged in their learning experience.

It is not yet clear what forms our on-campus activity might take – that will need further thought, discussion and planning over the coming weeks. We will need to accommodate the diverse circumstances, challenges and pressures facing all students, faculty and staff. We remain aware that any plans need to be flexible and adaptable, as conditions may change during the course of the year.

To explore possibilities for on-campus activity, and to stimulate discussion amongst everyone involved with the Faculty, in early February we established a working group. It comprises five students across multiple years of study, and four faculty and staff. The working group aims to disseminate an initial report about its thinking by the end of April.

If you have any questions, please get in touch via fom.bmgt@ubc.ca. In any case, we will send more news in due course.

Best,

Roger

A very warm welcome back to the BMGT program!  We hope your first week of the term has gone well.  We will keep this short – we have a few key pieces of information that we want to make sure you are aware of:

  1. The add/drop deadline for 2020W Term 2 courses is January 22 (11:59pm PT).  If you drop a course before that deadline, the course will not appear on your transcript and you will be eligible for a full tuition refund, if you have already paid for that course.
  2. Between January 23 and March 26, you can still withdraw from a course through your SSC using the “add/drop courses” function. For courses dropped during this period, you will receive a W standing and will be charged tuition.  Any changes to course registration between March 27 and April 13 require the submission of a Late Withdrawal Request and will be processed by the Academic Programs Office. Please note that requests to drop a course after March 27 require a formal submission of a Late Withdrawal Request and are not guaranteed to be approved.
  3. Academic integrity is very important to the UBC community.  We strongly encourage you to review the Academic Integrity material in the MGMT Foundations course in Canvas and to review any other academic integrity resources provided by your instructors.  If you have any questions about whether certain behaviour is considered academic misconduct, please ask your instructors well in advance.
  4. Academic concession is the official process to handle instances of student illness or other personal challenges that affect your ability to complete course work on schedule.  Again, please review the material on academic concession that is provided in the MGMT Foundations Canvas course.  In general, if you are requesting academic concession for one course you should connect first with the instructor.  If you think that you will require academic concession for multiple courses, please connect with the Academic Programs Office (fom.bmgt@ubc.ca) and we can assist with steps to move forward.
  5. The final exam schedule for the April exam period will be released in February.  Do not finalize any travel plans or other significant commitments until after you know your final exam schedule.  Requests for out-of-time exams will not be granted due to travel conflicts.
  6. There are several resources available to support you in a variety of areas; please reach out to fom.bmgt@ubc.ca if you are unsure about navigating the UBC system.  The BMGT Online Learning Resources for Students provides links to many resources including technology support, learning assistance, the Student Learning Hub, and Health and Wellness supports.

Welcome to and welcome back to the Bachelor of Management program!

There is some important information and a few events we want to make sure you are aware of.  As usual, we always update the Bachelor of Management Online Resources webpage and we encourage you to check that page frequently throughout the term to access key resources for you.

About Winter Term 1 and Term 2

Following on the recent Broadcast email that you received about Term 2 course delivery, we are clarifying that all MGMT courses in Winter Session Term 1 and Term 2 will be online. There will be no requirement to be in Kelowna, in BC, or even in Canada to complete a MGMT course for Term 1 & 2.

In-person experiences may be offered and we are exploring how these may complement online delivery. Any in-person experiences that we can offer will be completely optional and not required. We will ensure that all students, regardless of where they are residing and how they are participating in MGMT courses, will receive a comparable, high-quality learning experience.

No matter what, we will do everything we can to keep everybody together, connected as one community of students, faculty and staff.

Key Events on September 8

Two sessions will be offered by the Faculty of Management and the Management Students Association: a Create Meet Your Faculty session, which is an orientation for new-to-UBC students (those entering 1st year and transfer students), and a Welcome Back session for returning students (any student with 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year standing in the BMGT program). Please note that these sessions will be recorded and available if you are unable to attend the live sessions.  Recordings will be posted in the Management Foundations Canvas course (more on this course at the bottom of this email).

  • Create Meet your Faculty session, 1:30pm to 2:15pm (Pacific).  Recorded Zoom webinar. At this session you will meet the Dean, find key resources that will help you be successful, and hear advice from a student and faculty panel on ways to be successful in the BMGT program. You will also be able to ask questions live to the panelists and other staff and faculty.
  • Welcome Back session, 3:00pm-4:00pm (Pacific).  We will begin with a webinar where the Dean and the Management Students Association welcome you back.  We will then break out into three specific Zoom meetings, one primarily designed for students in 2ndyear, one for students in 3rd year, and one for students in 4th  Those break-out sessions will occur simultaneously; you can choose whichever breakout session is most relevant for you.  At each break-out session you will have an opportunity to hear from faculty teaching courses as well as staff discussing key programs and dates that you may be interested in.  Each break-out will cover different topics and answer questions that we have heard from students over the summer.
    • At 3:00pm (Pacific) start the Welcome Back session by attending the recorded larger group session.
    • When directed to shift to a break-out session, choose one of the following Zoom meetings:
      • 2ndyear Break-out (moderated by Will)
      • 3rdyear Break-out (moderated by Arshraj)
      • 4thyear Break-out (moderated by Emily):
    • Check out the Management Students Association webpagefor information on other events to help BMGT students connect and prepare for the academic year.

MGMT Foundations 2020/21 Canvas Course

You are enrolled in the MGMT Foundations 2020/21 Canvas course.  You should be able to access this course from your Dashboard in Canvas.  This course includes key information on how to access resources throughout the BMGT program to help you be successful as well as hosts the Welcome Session Recordings.

Dear Bachelor of Management (BMGT) student,

We hope you are staying well.

With 2020W registration approaching, we are writing to notify you of some changes to the BMGT program that have recently been approved by the UBC Okanagan Senate and will be published in the upcoming release (mid-June) of the UBC Okanagan Academic Calendar.  These changes are the result of a combination of student feedback and careful consideration by the Faculty regarding flexibility to complete the BMGT program. These changes are summarized below:

  1. Promotion through the BMGT program (moving from one year level to the next):
    • Previous requirement: you were required to have a certain number of academic credits, specific core courses completed, and a minimum GPA across those core courses to advance from one year level to the next
    • New requirement: promotion from one year level to the next will be based solely on the number of academic credits you have successfully completed.
    • This change is favourable for all students. Promotion requirements will now be:
      • First year standing: 0-23 credits completed
      • Second year standing: 24-47 credits completed
      • Third year standing: 48-77 credits completed
      • Fourth year Standing: 78 or more credits completed
    • You will not see the results of these changes in your SSC yet. We will be proactively advancing students who are positively impacted by this change before registration begins.  We anticipate that we will have those changes complete by June 22.  If you determine that this change impacts your advancement and is not reflected in your SSC by June 22, you can request a review by emailing bmgt@ubc.ca.
  2. Course prerequisites:
    • Previous Requirement: Most MGMT courses required specific year-standing in the BMGT program. For example, you needed Year 2 standing in the program to access 200-level MGMT courses. Based on previous promotion requirements, having Year 2 standing required that you had completed a specific set of 200-level courses. That full set of courses collectively served as prerequisites for courses at the 300-level.
    • New Requirement: Specific course-level prerequisites have been identified through extensive consultation with subject-matter experts for each individual course. These prerequisites now focus on the knowledge required for each course, rather than requiring sets of courses. In some cases, a specific year level standing is still a prerequisite for some courses; however, your year level is now based on the number of credits completed, rather than specific sets of courses. These changes might be favourable for you (e.g., you will now have access to coursework that would not have been available under the previous requirements) or you might find there is minimal or no impact to your course selection. It is important to note that there are certain courses that are key prerequisites for several subsequent courses (e.g., MGMT 100, MGMT 110 and 3 credits of ENGL). Students who have not yet completed these fundamental courses may find that the new course prerequisites can limit their course selection. Given the recency of these changes, we are willing to consider waiving certain course prerequisites for the 2020W session. If your access to coursework has been negatively impacted by the new course prerequisites, please contact the Academic Programs Office at bmgt@ubc.ca to discuss the option of requesting a course waiver.
  3. New CoursesThree new courses have been added to the Academic Calendar
    • Previously, the upper level elective course Intermediate Financial Accounting was offered as a 6-credit course (MGMT 400) in one term. We have now introduced two new 3-credit courses spread across two terms to replace that six-credit course. Students interested in accounting should complete MGMT 300 (Intermediate Financial Accounting 1) and MGMT 304 (Intermediate Financial Accounting 2).  MGMT 400 will no longer be offered. Students who have successfully completed MGMT 400 are not permitted to take MGMT 300 and/or MGMT 304 for credit.
    • We have introduced a new course, MGMT 414 (Managing and Leading Non-Profit and Public Sector Organizations).
  4. Removal of the 6 year limit for degree completion:
    • Previous requirement: Students were required to complete their BMGT degree within 6 years of being admitted to the program.
    • New requirement: There is no time limit for completion of the BMGT degree.

Best,

Dear Bachelor of Management student,

This is to provide you with a further update about MGMT course offerings for 2020W.

Currently the UBC-Okanagan course schedule is being adjusted to accommodate changes associated with moving to online delivery for Term 1. We expect to have an update for you in early June about when the online course schedule will be available. FYI, registration dates are posted at https://students.ok.ubc.ca/courses-money-enrolment/registration/registration-dates/; please note, these dates might be revised to accommodate continued course schedule changes.

As mentioned in the last message to you, for Winter Session Terms 1 and 2, we will offer all MGMT courses that are required for progression or completion of your program. We are not able to offer as many upper-level electives as we had originally planned in the pre-COVID world.  Electives were selected to balance topic areas across the two terms.  Please see below the PDF file for the list of all BMGT courses that will be offered in 2020W.

Attention: Continuing BMGT entering Year, 2, 3, and 4 in 2020W.

Dear student,

This is an update about the Bachelor of Management for Winter Session Term 1 (Sept-Dec 2020). We’ll have more news for you in a few weeks, once more detailed arrangements have been made.

All MGMT courses in Winter Session Term 1 will be online. There will be no requirement to be in Kelowna, in BC, or even in Canada to complete a MGMT course for Term 1.

That said, we appreciate that some students will be in Kelowna and, with that in mind, we will keep open the possibility that, if opportunities ariseand it is by no means clear that they will – we would explore how to complement online delivery with the possibility of on-campus and in-person experiences.

Faculty members and specialist course designers are busy developing high-quality online courses and learning materials for you. Also, in order to deliver the calibre and quality of education that you expect, we are focused on identifying the essential set of courses required to ensure that you can complete your degree requirements and progress to the next year, as planned.

For Winter Session Terms 1 and 2, we will offer all MGMT courses that are required for progression or completion of your program. However, we are not able to offer as many upper-level electives as we had originally planned in the pre-COVID world, because of the risk that we would be overwhelmed with all of the changes and disruption if we tried to put on more than an essential set of courses. We are currently finalising exactly which courses we can offer and will let you know the full set of electives in a few weeks. We will deliver all courses necessary for entry into the CPA Professional Education Program. Additionally, we are committed to balancing the set of electives as reasonably as possible across all interest areas, and across both terms.

Please note, the Faculty of Management is only responsible for the delivery of MGMT courses. If you are taking a course offered by another Faculty, you’ll need to verify the mode of delivery with that Faculty. On the Okanagan campus, most undergraduate courses in Winter Session Term 1 are online. There will be a small number of selected courses in other Faculties, mostly at the fourth-year level, that may be offered in-person, on campus.

Here’s a set of resources that you might find helpful. Please be aware that we are updating these sites regularly as new information becomes available, so it can be worth checking back frequently.

Dear student,

We are reaching out to provide you with further information about the Credit/D/Fail (Cr/D/F) standing option that is available to you. The application deadline for Credit/D/Fail (Cr/D/F) standing is Wednesday May 6th, 2020 at 11:59 pm PT The following provides you with some important reminders and considerations for Cr/D/F in specific relation to your BMGT degree program:

  1. You are required to complete a certain number of credits to earn your BMGT degree. A “Cr” or “D” will satisfy achieving course credits. An “F” standing will NOT provide you with course credits.
  2. In order to be eligible for the BMgt Dean’s Honour Roll for 2019W, you must have completed at least 27 credits across Term 1 and Term 2 (exception: if you were on Exchange or in a Co-op work term, you must have completed at least 15 credits in your non-Co-op or non-Exchange term) and achieved an 80% or higher GPA. The Honour Roll GPA will be calculated based on percentage grades only and will ignore any “Cr” or “D” standings. The Cr/D standings will count towards your completed credits. You are not eligible for Honour Roll if you have failed a course.
  3. A Cr/D standing will not negatively affect your advancement to a subsequent year standing for 2020W, provided you meet advancement requirements. Promotion criteria can be found here, and are based on both total credits achieved to-date and your completed core MGMT courses.
  4. A Cr/D standing will not negatively affect your Academic Standing in 2020W (e.g., Academic Probation, Failed Standing), which is calculated based on performance in 2019W. A Cr/D standing will not be used to calculate your overall GPA for core MGMT courses (this is part of Promotion Criteria).
  5. The BMgt Degree with Honours is awarded at graduation when you have achieved an average of 80% or better in all upper-level Management courses. As well, you must have been enrolled in 27 credits in at least one of your two final years. Exception: if you were on Co-op or Exchange, you must have completed at least 15 credits in a non-Co-op or non-Exchange term for this calculation. This means a Cr/D standing in a MGMT course for 2019W term 2 will not negatively affect your opportunity to achieve a BMgt Degree with Honours. NOTE: requesting a “F” standing WILL impact achieving a Degree with Honours; students must pass all courses to qualify.
  6. Cr or D standing on any course is sufficient to meet prerequisite requirements for any MGMT course.
  7. A minimum grade of 60% in ENGL 112 or ENGL 114 (or an average of 60% or higher in six (6) credits of ENGL) is a graduation requirement. The Faculty of Management has determined that a “Cr” standing is sufficient to meet the minimum ENGL requirement, but that a “D” standing is NOT sufficient.

If you are thinking of applying for a Cr/D/F standing, please check the FAQs, found here, to determine how this might impact your eligibility for awards and/or scholarships.

We have created a summary table and two student examples that explain the above considerations in more detail. Those can be found here.

Late Withdrawals (W) will be accepted until 11:59pm PDT May 6, 2020. You can find the form for MGMT courses here. Late withdrawal requests for non-MGMT courses must be directed to the Faculty offering the course. More information can be found here.

As always, if you have questions about the impact of these changes on your MGMT courses, please reach out to the Academic Programs Office at fom.bmgt@ubc.ca.

Dear student,

We are reaching out to provide you with further information about the Credit/D/Fail (Cr/D/F) standing that has been offered. Please see below for important considerations for Cr/D/F:

  1. In order to be eligible to apply for the Cr/D/F standing, you must complete all coursework and final assessments.
  2. The application form for Cr/D/F will be released on or after April 30, 2020. This date has been intentionally set so that most course grades should be available to you in your SSC. The form will allow you to apply for Cr/D/F standing for up to six courses at once.
  3. The Cr/D/F standing cannot be undone at a later date. If you choose to apply for Cr/D/F standing, please do so after you have seen your final course percentage grade.
  4. CR/D/F standing may have an impact on external scholarships or graduate program applications. Please consider the CR/D/F option carefully.
  5. A list of campus-wide Cr/D/F FAQs has been developed and will continue to be revised. You can find the link to these FAQs here.
  6. All undergraduate MGMT courses are eligible for Cr/D/F standing.
  7. Courses offered through other Faculties may or may not be eligible for Cr/D/F standing. For instance, the Irving K. Barber School has a number of courses that are not eligible for this standing. This list of courses can be found here.
  8. The Cr/D/F form must be submitted by May 6, 2020.

Other Reminders:

  1. Late Withdrawals (W) will be accepted until May 6, 2020. You can find the form for MGMT courses here. Late withdrawal requests for non-MGMT courses must be directed to the Faculty offering the course. More information can be found here.
  2. Deferred Standing (SD) requests for remaining coursework and final assessments should be completed and approved before the date of the final exam. Students can find the SD form for MGMT courses here.

Dear student,

On Friday, March 27, you received an important update from the Provost’s office that included two important pieces of information:

  1. The UBC Okanagan Senate passed Credit (Cr)/D/F as an option for course assessment. The Provost’s message included detailed information on the Cr/D/F option and we ask that you read it carefully. Cr/D/F requires you to complete all remaining coursework and final assessments.

A request form is currently under development and you can expect to receive additional information in the near future regarding how to apply for this option. All requests received before 11:59pm PT May 6, 2020 will be approved. This means that your final course grade should be available to you prior to the deadline to help inform your choice.  We have included additional details below regarding potential impacts of the Cr/D/F option with respect to MGMT coursework and the BMGT degree.

  • Credit (Cr) will satisfy the (minimum 60%) ENGL graduation requirement. Note: a ‘D’ or a ‘Fail (F)’ standing will NOT satisfy the ENGL graduation requirement.
  • Some MGMT courses have MGMT prerequisites attached to them. In these cases, MGMT courses completed with a Credit (Cr) or D standing can be used to satisfy those prerequisites.
  • Credit (Cr)/D/Fail (F) will not be used in any GPA calculations related to progression or standing in your Bachelor of Management program.
  • Special note to MGMT students considering pursuing the Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) designation:
    • CPA has provided communication to UBC that it will accept Credit (Cr)/D standing for CPA PEP prerequisite courses for COVID-19 affected terms. We expect CPA to provide updated information through its website. Please check for updates here: https://www.cpawsb.ca/news/covid-19-news
  1. The deadline to apply for Withdrawal (W) from a course has been extended to 11:59pm PT May 6, 2020. This aligns with the deadline for Cr/D/F. Choosing this option will result in a W on your transcript.

As always, if you have questions about the impact of these changes on your MGMT courses, please reach out to the Academic Programs Office at fom.bmgt@ubc.ca.

Additionally, in an effort to help you access important information the Faculty of Management has launched a webpage that archives Academic Programs Office student communications and provides links to valuable resources related to COVID-19 and UBC’s response. Dear student,

We understand that you have received a lot of communication in the past few days. Instructors will be reaching out to you by Thursday March 26, 2020 with confirmation as to how coursework and final assessments for each individual course will be completed.

Your grades and academic standing: You recently received communication from the Provost’s office outlining four potential options. Below we have outlined the processes required to proceed with each of the four standing options for your MGMT courses:

1. You can receive your percentage and letter grade: This is the typical route to complete a course (complete all outstanding assignments and final assessments and earn a final percentage and letter grade). This is the default option and therefore no special requests or forms are required of you.

2. You can request a withdrawal (W): All requests received before 11:59 pm PT on March 27, 2020 will be approved. Consideration of the following should be taken into account if you are considering this option:

  • If you receive student loans, please contact sis.ubco@ubc.ca before withdrawing.
  • If you are a student who receives third-party sponsorship funding, please connect with your sponsor; if you are an Indigenous student, please contact a Student Advisor in Aboriginal Programs & Services prior to proceeding with a withdrawal, as doing so may result in financial or academic implications for funding.
  • There are potential impacts of course withdrawal on your academic standing and your registration priority for the 2020W academic session. If you do not complete sufficient credits, you may not meet progression requirements to advance to the next year level of your program (Please refer to the academic calendar for specific requirements).

In order to request a Withdrawal from a MGMT course, please complete this form (note: a single form can be used to request withdrawal from multiple courses) and email it to the Academic Programs Office at fom.bmgt@ubc.ca. Please be aware that you will NOT receive credit for any course from which you choose to withdraw and your transcript will show a W.

3. You can request a Deferred Standing (SD): A deferred standing means that you are delaying specific coursework (including any final assessment, like a final exam). All outstanding coursework and final assessments MUST be completed by August 23, 2020. At this time, we expect that all outstanding coursework and final assessments will need to be completed remotely. You will receive a notation of “SD” on your transcript until all outstanding coursework and final assessments are complete (the SD will then be replaced with the letter grade and percentage you earned). Please note: if you were expecting to graduate in June, this may delay your graduation.

In order to request a Deferred Standing in a MGMT course, please complete this form and email it to the Academic Programs Office. You will need to complete one form per course) and email it to the Academic Programs Office (fom.bmgt@ubc.ca).

4. You can request “Credit/D/Fail” standing instead of percentage grade: UBC Okanagan is potentially introducing a new option for students (pending Senate approval). Specific details of this option are not yet available; we will share those once we have the appropriate details.

If you have questions regarding which option is best for you, please connect with Academic Advising at advising.ubco@ubc.ca.

If you are experiencing Financial Distress please reach out to Student Services via email (awards.ubco@ubc.ca). Financial Distress can be caused by a number of factors, and reaching out will connect you with someone that may be able to help with the following scenarios and others as they arise:

  • An unexpected change in living situation
  • Devaluation of a country’s currency
  • Inability to have funds transfer out of the country
  • Illness or death in the family
  • An exceptional medical situation
  • Other unforeseen circumstances you could not have planned for
