When Lamay Boshoff stepped into the Bachelor of Management program, she wasn’t just looking for a degree—Lamay was searching for a dynamic experience that would allow her to explore every facet of business and seize every opportunity. In her time at UBCO, Lamay discovered that success isn’t about being the smartest or the loudest in the room—it’s about being resourceful, building connections, and knowing when to listen. Whether she’s diving into discussions, embracing the unknown, or building connections that challenge and inspire, Lamay is driven by a desire to lead with passion and purpose. As the Captain of JDC West Okanagan, Lamay inspires others to step up, take risks, and always go the extra mile. No matter where her path leads, Lamay will continue to inspire those around her, embrace creative challenges and seize every opportunity for public speaking and leadership.
Q: What drew you to the Bachelor of Management program at UBCO?
A: Business studies is a major that allows you to keep as many doors open as possible. It ensures that you are not limited or confined to one area of study, but rather enables you to apply all these key components you learn to so many areas in life. It is a study that is only going to help you, which is what convinced me to switch to this major. Plus, management students are talkative like me.
Q: What have been your biggest takeaways from the program?
A: You don’t have to be the smartest, or even the most talkative, you just have to be resourceful. It is all about knocking on metaphorical doors, actively making and maintaining connections, and knowing when not to talk. Assume you always have more to learn from everyone around you, either through what they tell you or what they tell you through their actions.
Q: What has been the most rewarding part of the program so far?
A: One of the most rewarding parts of the program was learning how people think, work, and react. It was valuable to see, in real time, how problem-solving takes form and how to break it down into manageable steps. The most rewarding feeling for me is creating relationships with people who are driven like you, think like you, and are endlessly supportive. This program will push you so far out of your comfort zone in ways sometimes you’re not ready for, but it will provide you with the friendships that support you in taking those steps. We’re all in this together.
Q: What advice or insight would you give a prospective student considering the program?
A: Embarrass yourself. Ask to be the first one up. Ask if you can help with something you have no idea how to help with. Ask how things work, and if you can try next. Raise your hand, take up space, learn and retain names told to you, and remember to bring your name card to your management classes. Push and push for the things you want and do it with kindness. People who lead with passion are often remembered which is what you need in business.
Q: Are you involved in any clubs or student organizations on-campus? If so, what inspired you to get involved?
A: The biggest organization I am involved with is being Captain of JDC West Okanagan. I started as a delegate and was elected by my peers to become Co-Captain alongside my companion Michelle. Seeing how quickly and effectively my peers learned through participating in this organization inspired me to go for it myself. The first chance I got I asked where I could help, how decisions were made, and what the club needed most. From there, I kept learning, doing, and participating until I was confident enough that those around me saw me fit for Captain. I was inspired really, and JDC West is overall such an awesome experience that I genuinely enjoy so much.
Q: What are your future goals?
A: In the future, I would like to be in a position where I can inspire others. Whatever career path I decide to take, I strive to create a driven team of like-minded individuals and surround myself with colleagues who lead with passion. I enjoy having creative liberty and opportunities for public speaking.
Q: Do you have anything else you’d like to share?
A: Go the extra mile for yourself, others, work, school, and your future.
