Attracted to UBCO by the positive experiences of his older brothers, Ifaz Chowdhury sought to explore the abundant opportunities and academic growth the university offered firsthand. His journey through the Management program has been marked by significant takeaways, including his active involvement as the VP of Finance for the Management Student Association and participation in the co-op program, which has led Ifaz toward a bright future in accounting.
Q: What drew you to the Bachelor of Management program at UBCO?
A: UBCO’s reputation as an excellent university with a strong Management program captured my interest when I was applying to universities. What truly caught my attention, however, was the vibrant student community and the opportunities to enhance my university experience beyond the classroom. As the youngest of three brothers who all attended UBCO, I saw firsthand the benefits of participating in the co-op program, engaging in research projects, and getting involved with organizations like the Management Student Association.
Q: What have been your biggest takeaways from the program?
A: The Faculty of Management taught me to hone my skills in critical thinking as I learned the ability to strategize efficiently so I could excel at my courses every semester. The numerous group projects helped develop my soft skills and allowed me to grow into leadership roles; this experience helped me mature outside of being a student as I learned how to effectively work in groups.
Q: What has been the most rewarding part of the program so far?
A: The most rewarding part of the program for me would be the network of connections that I’ve made throughout my time in the program. Whether it’s from the Management Student Association’s business trips, various professors who’ve always helped me in my journey or my peers all of whom I have the utmost confidence in; this wealth of connections that you leave university with will always stay with you.
Q: What advice or insight would you give a prospective student considering the program?
A: Surround yourself with peers willing to learn and grow with you. University is a short period of your life but the people you are with can make a big difference to the trajectory of your growth. Talk to your professors as they’re always here to help, make use of the extra office hours and make time for yourself so you can enjoy this beautiful city as well!
Q: Are you involved in any clubs or student organizations on-campus? If so, what inspired you to get involved?
A: During the 2023-2024 academic year, I assumed the role of VP Finance for the Management Student Association where I was responsible for planning the budget, processing reimbursements, and ensuring the financial stability of the association to meet our goals. After two years of online classes due to the pandemic, I was motivated to enhance the university experience for new students as we returned to in-person learning. By joining the student association, I aimed to foster a strong sense of community among students and faculty. This motivation led to my successful election as the Internal Director of Finance for the 2022-2023 term, where I gained valuable experience that helped me secure the VP Finance position for 2023-2024.
Q: Are you or have you been in a co-op placement? If so, what was your role with that company?
A: I was in a co-op placement in the summer of 2022 where I worked as an Administrative Underwriter for Federated Insurance. My role included creating spreadsheets for the company’s current business events and finances, aiding in the conversion of platforms and administrative duties such as managing files and data entry.
Q: What were the greatest benefits of the program and what advice would you share with someone considering doing a co-op?
A: Co-op offers students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a professional setting related to their field of study, which can enhance their skills and knowledge. As a Finance/Accounting student, I was able to enter the industry through underwriting where I made connections that helped me secure a job offer right after graduation. I would highly recommend anyone considering co-op as it greatly helps with the transition from being a student to entering the workforce and helps make some lifelong connections along the way.
Q: What are your future goals?
A: My future career goal is to be an Accountant, so coming out of university I’m already taking the next steps I need to complete my chartered designation with a big-four accounting firm. Afterwards, I want to work my way up to be a partner at a firm or consider other options such as private equity.
Q: Do you have anything else you’d like to share?
A: My experience within the Faculty of Management includes serving as a TA for three required MGMT courses, participating in award-winning research that earned the Faculty of Management Research Award, joining the co-op program, competing on the JDCW Accounting team, and serving as a VP in the Management Student Association. I believe that with determination, this program can provide not only strong academic knowledge but also the opportunity to develop lasting skills.
