Why hire a co-op student?

A co-op student is an efficient way to take on project work or day-to-day demand. Cover key responsibilities while building your future full-time pipeline.

Wage subsidies—and post for free

Job postings are free. No advertising costs, no subscription, no per-hire cost.

Co-op hires are paid, and may qualify for a subsidy. Eligible employers can apply for 50% of a student’s wages, up to $5,000 through the federal Student Work Placement Program, or 70%, up to $7,000, for students from under-represented groups.

Hiring an international student? UBC Okanagan’s ISI Co-op Hiring Grant offers up to $5,000.

Help offset the cost of hiring a co-op student through federal and provincial wage subsidy programs. Our team can help you identify what you qualify for. Contact us about subsidies and incentives.

Students bring knowledge across key business areas

Students bring knowledge across accounting, finance, marketing, human resources, business analytics, operations, project management, sales and business development, and strategy and consulting.

What makes a co-op?

We recommend 4- or 8-month terms

We won’t turn down a longer placement, but shorter terms work better on both sides. You see more students over time, which builds a wider pipeline; students get a range of experience rather than one long stint.

What makes it an official work term

Duration 4- or 8-month consecutive positions.
Hours Minimum 420 total hours per 4-month term.
Employment Type Full-time, hired as standard employee eligible for a T4. Students cannot be hired as independent contractors.
Compensation All positions must be paid, professional roles.

When to recruit

Students start three times a year, but co-op hiring runs year-round. Whenever you begin, a recruiting cycle is never far away.

Work term Recruit
Fall: September to December May to August
Summer: May to August January to April
Winter: January to April September to December

Part-time and new-grad roles can be posted at any time.
