Biography
Dr. Niloofar Akbarian-Saravi is a Postdoctoral Fellow at UBC’s Materials and Manufacturing Research Institute and a sessional lecturer in the Faculty of Management. She holds dual PhDs in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, specializing in sustainable operations research, supply chain management, and decision analytics. Her research develops optimization and risk-aware decision-making frameworks that integrate techno-economic analysis, life cycle assessment, and multi-criteria decision-making to support complex supply chain and operations problems. These models are translated into interactive dashboards and decision-support systems that make advanced analytics transparent, actionable, and sustainability-oriented for industries. She has published over 25 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters in journals such as the Journal of Cleaner Production, Sustainable Cities and Society, and Computers & Chemical Engineering, and her work has been recognized with awards from the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE) and other professional societies.
In addition to research, Dr. Akbarian-Saravi is committed to teaching, mentorship, and leadership. She has designed and taught courses in business analytics, quantitative decision-making, and circular economy sustainability for both academic and industry-level learners. She has led several industry-partnered projects funded by MITACS Accelerate-NSERC Alliance, European Government, MITACS Accelerate and the Circular Economy Seed Funding programs, translating her research into real-world manufacturing and sustainability applications. Beyond academia, she has engaged in entrepreneurship as founder of SustainPro Solutions Inc., a UBC-affiliated venture delivering decision-support dashboards for sustainable manufacturing. She is also an active member of the academic community, serving as a reviewer, competition chair, and session organizer at international conferences, and was appointed Bulletin Editor for the Canadian Operational Research Society (CORS). She is an alumna of the McCall MacBain Postdoctoral Leadership Program, offered through the DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University, which fostered her skills in research impact, innovation, and inclusive leadership.
