Celebrating the Class of 2026: Spotlight on Class Speaker, Teresa Mak

June 4, 2026

As the graduating class speaker for the Faculty of Management, Teresa reflects on a journey shaped by unexpected beginnings, meaningful connections, and transformative opportunities at UBC Okanagan. From discovering a sense of belonging on a new campus to stepping into leadership roles that pushed them beyond their comfort zone, their story captures the spirit of curiosity, resilience, and community that defines the UBCO experience. In this Q&A, they share the lessons, memories, and motivations that shaped their time here, and the mindset they’ll carry forward into life after graduation.

What inspired you to choose UBC Okanagan for your studies?

I never expected to study at UBC Okanagan. My original plan was to remain in Alberta for university, but my friends and family encouraged me to apply to UBC, so I sent an application without much expectation. When I was accepted, I decided to take the chance and move to Kelowna. Since then, UBCO has become more than just a place to study. I found a supportive community, meaningful opportunities, and a strong sense of belonging. After completing my first year, I knew UBCO was the right place for me, and I chose to continue my degree here.

What are some of your biggest takeaways from your program?

One of my biggest takeaways was the opportunities available outside the classroom. Through business trips, mentoring program, and case competition organized by the Management Student Association (MSA), I connected with industry professionals and students from other institutions. These experiences also allowed me to explore different disciplines within the program, such as marketing, accounting, finance, and operations.

Another takeaway was the close-knit community at UBCO. The smaller campus environment made it easier to build relationships with professors and staff in the Faculty of Management. Their support extended beyond academics, but took time to discuss career paths, provide guidance, and genuinely get to know students on a personal level.

What experiences at UBCO helped you grow or changed your perspective?

University became a space for self‑discovery, where I learned more about my interests, strengths, and values. I took courses across different disciplines which helped me understand the areas I was most passionate about and where my strengths aligned. Getting involved with the MSA also had a major impact on my growth. The most rewarding experience was helping organize a leadership conference for more than 250 attendees at UBCO. That opportunity pushed me outside of my comfort zone and challenged me to develop new skills in leadership, event planning, communication, and teamwork. Looking back, opportunities like these are what made my university experience so meaningful and transformative.

What’s next for you after graduation?

I’m grateful to begin my career in Kelowna and gain professional experience in Canada. While I am still figuring out my long‑term path, whether that means staying in Canada or pursuing opportunities elsewhere — I’m excited to continue learning and growing through new experiences. For me, life is about learning through trial and error, embracing opportunities, and staying open to where those experiences may lead.

What advice would you give to current or future UBCO students?

Opportunities come when you go after them. Get involved! Join clubs, attend events, take the time to talk to professors, employers, and student leaders. The more you put yourself out there, the more people will remember you, and that visibility often leads to unexpected opportunities. Many of the opportunities I’ve received, including my job, came from simply showing up and building connections with people.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about your journey or your time at UBCO?

The support I received and the friendships I made are what made my time at UBCO so special. It’s bittersweet to see friends move away after graduation, but the memories we created will always stay with me. This campus helped me grow into a more independent person. I’m grateful for the professors who were incredibly kind, supportive, and invested in my success. I have never regretted choosing UBCO for my undergraduate studies, and the lessons and relationships I gained here will continue to shape me long after graduation.
